The Kickstarter campaign for The Broken Cask Inn runs through April 23rd, with backers able to grab a physical softcover copy of the sourcebook for $15 (£11). Its systems seem thorough enough to provide for several sessions, and the artwork by illustrator Claudia Cangini showcases warm, inviting interiors and plenty of interesting conversations to be discovered. The Broken Cask Inn’s tales are fun, cosy and meant to feel like a comforting meal at the end of a long day. That also puts it in a kind of awkward spot, since many games that would benefit from having 3d space rendered are also complicated enough to significantly benefit from scripting rather than rolling dice by hand. That makes TS the best at certain games that use 3d space gimmicks or lots of physical tokens (like Dread - you literally can't play Jenga on Roll20 or Map Tool), or for people that really enjoy the physical aspects of tabletop games like miniatures and 3d terrain, or collecting and rolling dice (although it loses some points for lack of webcams in that regard).

Excluding the role of webcam integration, if you wanted to feel the most like you're sitting around a real table rolling real dice and fiddling with real miniatures then Tabletop Simulator is far and away the best at that. Where it beats other VTTs is that it models 3d space and personal presence much better.
It can script up many of the same features of other VTTs, but currently you'd mostly need to do it yourself unless you really love Pathfinder or maybe 5e D&D since they're popular enough to get some material.

Tavern Keeper, never heard of it before this. There's one part where FG is better than Roll20 and that's the subscription model - FG has one time fee vs monthly subscription of Roll20.

I think FG could do itself favour by having some sort of free option. So, I am putting it off to be visited later for separate shorter game, perhaps. Investing time to learn the functionality while being midst of active campaign (homebrew) just wouldn't be fair chance for FG.

Yes, I know that there is 30 day trial but if I start that period, I have to take it seriously enough so that at the end of that period I will know whether it's worth it. Roll20 simply because it is free and simple. Also, Discord can be used (and is used) for between-sessions general chat within our group so that's a bonus. I've never used Roll20 voice except for brief test as I've been told that Discord voice quality is superior and I've taken that as granted. We use same setup, voice on Discord and everything else on Roll20.
